Actually - I think it would have been a lot more scary if turned out to be about Jack going crazy and having passed mental illness onto his son, rather than some ambiguous back story about a malevolent building with a folksy psychic. I also would have liked to see a slower deterioration of Jack - you think this could have been squeezed into the two hour plus running time. I am not sure if that fits into the plot of the original novel though, not having read it. I'm glad I finally saw it, but I'm glad I don't have to go through it again, not really liking scary movies in the first place. However, I may watch the much shorter remake again.
On the plus side, the sets were fantastic, especially the deco carpeting.
Off topic, I can't believe people used to smoke so much in front of their children like it was nothing. My parents did the same, but it seems so shocking now. Also, Shelley Duvall was HOT.
