I'm ready to cut the director. The original theatrical release left the main plot complication as an accident of fate. The director's cut was nearly an hour longer when it could have used a little trimming in the first place, and explained what happened in excruciating detail, in a manner that wasn't consistent for the characters, and yet still managed to gloss over and "tell instead of show" all the motivations. What I remembered as a cute little slice-of-life movie turned out to be a drawn-out, melodramatic, craptastic mess.
Moral of the story: EDITING IS GOOD.
