School Time!

I am often amazed at how many people don't know that Christ and Christmas don't really go together, but that since the birth of Christ was not well documented, custom dictated that His birthday be celebrated during Saturnalia. Conveniently, ancient peoples of Northern Europe celebrated December 25 as the first day that the invincible sun was once again visibly returning north after its six-month-long southward trek down the horizon, further associating the Christ story with the cult of Mithra.

When I was a little tiny girl in Finland, the winter was dark and long, so Christmas was a big deal. I think I'll haul out my decorations and yule up my cubicle this week.

PS, I am a Christian, but I celebrate that at Easter! (With nice, pagan-influenced colored eggs.)
